Research Interests

Global markets create infinite opportunities for accidental transport of potentially harmful species.  Even with stringent regulations, monitoring of ports, and early detection technology, the number of exotic insects establishing populations continues to increase each year.  I am interested in the use of natural enemies to mitigate the impact of invasive forest insects.  My past and current research focuses on implementation, improvements, and evaluation of a biological control program for the hemlock woolly adelgid, Adelges tsugae  (HWA).  This program spans multiple states, agencies, and universities in an effort to maintain healthy hemlock trees as part of the eastern forests.

“Growing up in rural Illinois, a region dominated by agriculture and lacking in forests, I recognized the value of an individual tree.  My appreciation and fascination of the complexities within a forest ecosystem have steadily grown over time.”
